Overview of Project UMass HealthNet is an outreach initiative administered by the Lamar Soutter Library of the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS). The project establishes a vehicle for reliable consumer health information geared towards Massachusetts residents. The project also addresses the need for connectivity for UMMS faculty and students at off-campus teaching locations. The website provides original information as well as links to critically evaluated resources geared for patients and offer information on health care services in the central and western Massachusetts regions. The website is designed to emphasize locally produced information on pertinent health topics. Experts in the UMMS and its clinical partner UMass Memorial Health Care develop topic areas. Local health associations and agencies also contribute material to the site. The website serves as a clearinghouse for information about local agencies, and health services corporations. The website links to other health information resources of national repute. HealthNet objectives are borne out of a desire to expand much-needed access to health information to consumers, physicians, health professionals, and students. HealthNet responds to the need for evaluated health information resources made available through the latest technologies.
